Elderly woman injured trying to flee Maltese

Octogenarian attacked by ‘small but vicious dogs’.

A QUIGNEY octogenarian on a stroll to the supermarket was attacked by a group pack of rogue Maltese dogs poodles and fell on the pavement, breaking her hand and hip last week.

When Violet Lundall, 81, set off from her Bonanza Road home to buy groceries early last Wednesday, she had no idea she would land up in Frere Hospital’s orthopaedic ward in severe pain shortly afterwards.

“But she lives alone, is behind with her rent and has nothing. She was crying. So we helped by fixing the mesh that covers her driveway gate so the dogs can’t get out again.”

When the Daily Dispatch visited the dog owner’s home yesterday, she was out and two scruffy Maltese and a terrier-cross barked fiercely at the meshed gate, which was padlocked together with a new chain to keep the mutts off the street.

A “Beware of the Dogs” sign in scarlet lettering had also been fixed to the front gate.

East London SPCA’s Lionel Taylor said according to municipal bylaws, dogs must be under their owners’ control.

“The only way to do this is to ensure that people’s properties are properly enclosed.”
