Hostages held in violent services protest

Service delivery protests turned ugly on Monday night in Stutterheim and police had to use force to disperse an angry crowd who kept several government employees hostage.

Residents wanted mayor Mncekeleli Peter to speak to them.

When he arrived, residents yelled at him.

“This chaos is caused by information that we are not getting from ward committee members.

“We will have a dedicated team to make sure this project is finished before these machines are removed,” Peter told the crowd.

But before he could finish, residents interrupted him. They then became violent and surged towards the police.

Stun grenades and rubber bullets were fired and Peter was swiftly removed from the crowd.

Police arrested 27 residents who spent the night in the King William’s Town police holding cells.

They appeared in court yesterday. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za
