Kayser’s Beach road a ‘danger to

Kayser's Beach residents are fed up with the crumbling road leading into the area, which has become hazardous and is damaging vehicles.

The Kayser’s Beach main road, just off the R72 between Port Alfred and East London, is riddled with potholes and residents complain no maintenance of the road is being done.

Resident Buks du Preez said: “This road was constructed about five years ago and since day one there’ve been problems. The way it was done must have been really below standard.

“Even when repairs are done, that only lasts for a few weeks then its back to how it was.”

Another resident, Luana Collins, said in a matter of a few months the state of the road had gone from bad to shocking.

“We were so happy when they started tarring the road, but sometimes we think it would have just been better if they had left it like that.

“There is no longer any way around the potholes anymore, we just have to drive through them,” she said.

Mike Kopke said he often resorted to filling up the holes with sabunga.

“But why must I fix the road myself? What about all the money that government puts into these projects – where does it all go?

“Even the sabunga, it does not last; the minute it rains the road gets broken down again,” said Kopke.

Chairman of the Kayser’s Beach Ratepayers’ Association John Kingon said the concerns of residents were well founded.

“The road really is a mess and just not safe.

“This area attracts a lot of tourists and the worry is that the visitors are at risk because they do not know what to expect, whereas the residents know what to look out for,” said Kingon.

He said he had made numerous attempts to get something done about the potholes.

“The road is not being maintained. A while back they sent out inspectors who did a sort of partial repair, leaving some potholes wide open and with the rains lately, it is only going to get worse,” he said.
