Tears of joy as Mbete’s son ties knot

Bishop Andile Mbete broke down in tears as he watched his eldest son Khakalethu saying “I do” to Claudette Mthale over the weekend.

The two wed in a traditional style wedding extravaganza at the Methodist Church of Southern Africa at Fort Malan near Willowvale on Saturday.

“KK”, as the groom is affectionately known, and Mthale have been dating since 2010.

It was the couple’s decision to choose a tradition wedding over a white one that excited the Bishop most.

Mbete said since his son was Xhosa and his daughter-in-law Pedi, having a traditional wedding symbolised unity between the two cultures, something that would strengthen the wedding of the two and their respective nations.

KK works as a finance manager at Woolworths in Cape Town and his wife as a finance manager at Sambou in Johannesburg.

Mbete told the guests of how he watched his son grow, as “I have taken KK through initiation school about a decade ago and made a man out of him.

“And now here we are witnessing the young man growing up to take the responsibility of being a married man. Is that not what any parent would like to witness? What else can I ask from God except to thank him for the joy and happiness he brought to my son and his wife,” said a visibly moved Mbete.

In reply, the groom thanked his father for being a friend and mentor, and for showing him how to love and respect a woman and take care of her “by ever-loving my mother ”.

Guests, who also wore traditional attire, included Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla Mandela; his mother Nolusapho Mandela and Western Pondoland Queen MaDosini Ndamase.

The bride’s parents also wished the couple well, saying key to any long-term relationship was to always love and respect each other.

The wedding continued at the Mbete’s Fort Malan village home until late yesterday. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
