Not just garden variety of music at Sundowners

An initiative to use some of East London’s most under-utilised venues will this weekend see the Ann Bryant Art Gallery host the Sundowners Experience.

Tomorrow’s event will see local musicians perform live while spectators attending can enjoy the garden scenery over drinks.

One of the show’s organisers, Ays Mabusela, said they wanted to create a relaxed setting for people to mingle and network while enjoying the best of homegrown music.

This is the second event following a launch last month at 9 Miles in Vincent.

More are scheduled to take place over the festive season.

Artists who will be performing, are SYNC, La Peafa, Shirley D and Spoky. Local DJs taking part, include Pantsula, Smack, Slim Deep, Pandora, Minty and Mobi Dixon, who will be launching his Tribal Soul album on the day.

Although the art gallery won’t be open during the event, Mabusela said people would be able to buy drinks from a cash bar.

“We want people to bring their picnic baskets and enjoy the outdoor experience.”

Ann Bryant manager Leon du Preez said they wanted to open the gates to support arts in the city.

SYNC is an innovative dance and neo-soul music duo made up of Mabusela and Thabo Kalane, a DJ. Their music is a fusion of live instruments and disc jockey jams.

Another event that will take place at the gallery this month, is Art in the Park on November 29.

The event will feature fine-art crafts, local jazz bands and musicians while visitors will also get a chance to sample artisan beer.

Du Preez said the gallery would be open on the day. – poliswap@dispatch.co.za
