Charges against Vavi reinstated amid court action

As charges were reinstated against Congress of South African Trade Unions general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi‚ his allies served court papers on the federation to force it to convene a special national congress.

The charges include his “intimate relationship” with a junior employee as well as financial irregularities.

Vavi found himself on his own at yesterday’s special central executive committee meeting after seven unions aligned to the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) boycotted the gathering.

The unions took a decision not to participate in the meetings following Numsa’s expulsion last weekend. They described the majority of union leaders who voted in favour of Numsa’s expulsion as “gangsters”.

The ANC yesterday intervened again to urge parties to do everything to ensure the unity of Cosatu. It is understood that the party was wary of Cosatu leaders acting against Vavi. He is popular among workers and the move would be damaging for the party and the alliance.

According to sources‚ charges were reinstated‚ but how the process unfolds will be determined through discussions with the ANC task team as well as the seven unions who did not attend yesterday’s meeting.

ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa yesterday confirmed that the party had met Cosatu leaders on Tuesday. He would not go into detail but said the party’s intervention was in line with fostering the federation’s unity.

The seven unions said they would continue to fight for a Cosatu special national congress‚ which would see the federation holding fresh elections and deciding on the future direction of Cosatu in relation to its posture towards the alliance with the ANC and the SACP.

According to insiders‚ the unions served Cosatu with a notice that they will be taking it to court to force federation president Sdumo Dlamini to convene the gathering.

The meeting got off to a late start after Vavi’s opponents met yesterday morning to discuss their approach to the disciplinary charges against him‚ following the ANC’s intervention.

He is set to face nine charges – including misconduct linked to his affair with the junior employee‚ taking to twitter to air grievances‚ personal travel expenses charged to Cosatu‚ a Carte Blanche interview and violating the conditions of his suspension.

Cosatu had indicated it would call for his summary dismissal in his disciplinary hearing. — BDLive
