Armatrading in EL for last tour

Drop the Pilot singer Joan Armatrading has included South Africa in her final world tour and will be performing in East London next year.

The three-time Grammy award nominee, who rocked the 1970s, 80s and 90s with her contralto voice and emotional lyrics about the pain and anguish of love, will appear in East London on July 6 next year.

Armatrading, 64, will also be performing in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

Born in 1950 in the Caribbean, Armatrading grew up in a slum district of Birmingham, England, and began writing songs at 14.

She has released more than 20 albums, received Grammy nominations and a Brit Award nomination, and has composed songs in a variety of genres including pop, blues, folk, reggae and jazz.

Her solo world tour shows will feature favourites such as Me, Myself, I; Love and Affection; Willow and Drop the Pilot, as well as some of her more recent compositions.

According to Kim Mari of Real concerts, the show will be “a musical voyage spanning Joan Armatrading’s entire career”.

The singer’s highest charting album in both the UK and US was Me, Myself, I in 1980, with the title track a UK Top 40 hit single.

Besides recording, Armatrading has toured extensively and shared a stage with music legends such as Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, but the star has always been reluctant to discuss her private life.

She said although she had no plans to retire, this would be her last major tour.

“For the first time, these concerts will be me, solo on stage, playing the guitar and piano and singing,” she said.

“I want these concerts to be a special, lively, interactive one-to-one experience. I have absolutely enjoyed 42 years of performances but now, with my final major tour, I want to capture a unique memory for both myself and my audience.”

Armatrading is set to appear at Hemingways on July 6, but marketing manager Neville Austin declined to comment at this early stage. She will be supported by alternative rock artist Jesse Clegg.

Clegg, according to information on his website, is appearing in the city at the Boeretroos Theatre on December 10.

Tickets for Armatrading’s show range from R450 to R650 and are available from www.computicket.com. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
