EL singer makes waves abroad

East London-born singer Cathryn Green, now based in Ireland, is making waves abroad with the release of her new extended mixtape (EP) — The Apple.

Green’s single Hello made it to the top 50 of the Irish music charts.

She said appearing on the Irish artist airplay chart was a major boost for one’s career.

“My song reached number 43 a month ago when it was released. I was recently informed that the Irish music publication Hot Press has included me in their forthcoming ‘artists to watch for 2015’ list, which I’m very excited about,” she said.

The 32-year-old moved to Ireland seven years ago to pursue a career in music.

“I felt a strong call in my heart to go to Ireland as I’ve always felt a connection to the country. My great-grandparents on my mother’s side are originally from Ireland and many of the artists that I loved listening to whilst growing up are Irish, like The Cranberries, Clannad and Enya,” she said.

The former George Randall High School pupil started singing at a young age and it was only in her mid 20s that she started writing her own music. She pursued a career in accountancy but soon left it for music.

“I did not feel fulfilled by what I was doing every day. At the same time I am thankful for that period in my life and all the people I got to know. But I felt empty with each day passing by, and not even trying to do anything with my music, so I took the leap,” she said.

Since moving to Ireland, Green has released two EPs, The Apple and the 2010 Can You Understand EP. “I just love to write and perform. People I’ve known have inspired my lyrics and music and I’d hope that in turn my music can inspire people.

“There’s a very active music scene all over Ireland and music fans seem to have an insatiable appetite for music of all kinds,” she said.

Green said her music journey had not been easy but she persevered with the support of others.

“People in the music industry here have been very supportive and I've enjoyed many lovely experiences with the local musicians I've played with,” she said.

Green hoped her latest offering would help raise awareness about her music in preparation for the release of her debut album.

“I’m hoping to record a collection of songs that trace my musical development from East London to Ireland and beyond,” she said.
