ANC birthday targets WC

Excitement filled the room when ANC provincial executive committee member Mlibo Qoboshiyane raised his wine glass to toast the party’s 103rd birthday yesterday.

The event in East London also marked the official send-off of more than 10000 ANC members and supporters expected to attend the party’s celebrations in Cape Town tomorrow.

More than 50000 ANC members and supporters as well 2500 guests will celebrate the birth of the continent’s longest serving liberation movement, as well as the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Charter.

Qoboshiyane cut a cake and declared: “We want to paint the Western Cape black, green and gold.”

The Daily Dispatch reported yesterday that ANC regional leaders received overwhelming support from party members and supporters who want join thousands in celebration at the Cape Town stadium in Greenpoint tomorrow.

Among those leaving the province for Cape Town today is Nozizwe Otola, who also attended the cake cutting ceremony yesterday.

The Buffalo City councillor said being part of the historic celebration was important for her as “it reminds of why our forefathers sacrificed so much for us to be liberated”.

President Jacob Zuma and his entire national executive committee (NEC) were locked in a meeting in Cape Town yesterday preparing for the “big day” tomorrow, Qoboshiyane said yesterday.

The Western Cape is the only province not run by the ANC.

The DA took over the reins in the City of Cape Town in March 2006 and in 2009 took over provincial government control from the ANC. Qoboshiyane confirmed yesterday that Zuma and his team had “been crisscrossing the (Western Cape) province, preaching the gospel of hope, that this country belongs to all – black and white”.

The media has reported on several incidents of alleged racism in the Western Cape.

Last month Cosatu Western Cape secretary Tony Ehrenreich claimed load-shedding in affluent areas took place during off-peak hours while poorer areas were without power during peak times.

The DA-led city council denied the allegations.

Qoboshiyane said: “The symbolic gesture we are making today (cake cutting) confirms that indeed we need to unite people of this country.

“We need to ensure that there is development and prosperity everywhere,” added Qoboshiyane.
