Resort blitz accused has day in court

One of Duncan Village’s most-wanted suspects has been arrested and is due to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Two of his accomplices are still on the run but police operations to trace them are under way.

The men are wanted in connection with the robbery and attack on a Sunrise-on-Sea couple last month after they were given work as casual workers.

It was on the morning of December 16 while busy with a carpentry job that the men decided to turn on their employer.

The complainants in the case are Michael “Mickey” Kirkhoff and his wife, Sharon.

Kirkhoff is the brother of East London crime prevention unit commander Colonel Shannon Kirkhoff.

Kirkhoff had been busy with a carpentry job when he unknowingly employed a wanted suspect from Duncan Village in November.

At the time, the man was wanted in connection with cases of housebreaking, as well as possession of an illegal firearm and drugs.

Eastern Cape police declined yesterday to speak about the arrest of the wanted man, saying the article would jeopardise their investigation and scare off the remaining two suspects implicated in the attack.

The Daily Dispatch, however, understands the man was arrested last week in East London during a police operation.

He is likely to face charges, including robbery with aggravating circumstances, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and attempted murder.

The arrest was welcomed by residents of the normally quiet seaside village on the Wild Coast Jikeleza.

Sharon herself posted on Facebook, saying: “Yes, congratulations SAPS.

“I cannot thank you enough. Mickey and I are so very grateful. We must stop this man from hurting more innocent people.”

Sharon survived the attack after she was hit on the head with a brick by the main suspect. He then tied her up and put her inside her husband’s Mercedes-Benz Vito. She managed to untie herself and escape.

The man later drove away from the scene with the Vito, a laptop, cellphone, wallets and R700.

The attack left her husband in a critical condition after he was bashed on the head with a hammer, causing his skull to crack.

Although he has been discharged from hospital, Kirkhoff still suffers from visual damage and headaches. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
