Qunu meeting still on – Mandla

A Mandela family meeting at Qunu today will go ahead as planned. This was confirmed by Mandla Mandela who said there was nothing stopping family members from meeting.

He was referring to Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s court attempt to prevent the gathering from taking place.

“We are going to the meeting smiling and united. This is an important meeting to us,” said Mandela, adding it would be only attended by men as heads of their respective families.

AbaThembu royal family spokesman Daludumo Mtirara also said the meeting would go ahead as initially planned.

“Nothing is going to change at all. It will start at 10am and we expect all the houses of the core of AmaDlomo to attend,” said

Mtirara, who heads up a faction of the royal family lobbying for the removal of King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo.

He said the meeting had the blessing of Graça Machel and royal houses expected to attend along with the Mandelas were Mtirara, Mnqanqeni, Joyi, Shweni and Matanzima.

Mtirara and Mandela were respondents in a failed court bid by Madikizela-Mandela to stop the meeting from going ahead.

The Dispatch yesterday reported that Madikizela-Mandela was now planning to take the matter to the Constitutional Court.

Mandela and Mtirara’s attorney Billy Gundelfinger said he had only learnt that Madikizela-Mandela was going to the Constitutional Court through the media.

“I have not been served with any papers regarding the urgent applications going to Concourt. But should that happen, the matter will be opposed,” said Gundelfinger, adding the Qunu meeting would go ahead as planned as there was nothing legally preventing it from taking place.

Late yesterday afternoon Madikizela-Mandela’s attorney confirmed that he had finished drafting the papers which he intended to file at the Constitutional Court. “We are not letting this go,” Notyesi said.

At the time of writing yesterday there was confirmation of the papers having been filed.

Mtirara said Madikizela-Mandela should have discussed her opposition to the meeting with the family instead of going to the courts. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
