Keeping Anwa Dramat at the helm of the Hawks – an institution “of the first importance” – was critical to its operations and to how it was viewed by the public‚ the High Court heard yesterday.

The Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) went back to court urgently seeking to enforce a previous order‚ given last week‚ which set aside Lieutenant-General Dramat’s suspension as unlawful.

It wants the court to order that‚ notwithstanding any appeal process‚ Dramat be permitted to return to work.

In a related development, parliament’s police committee decided unanimously yesterday to ask guidance from Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete as to whether it was the right committee to consider a request by Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko for an investigation into Dramat’s removal.

Dramat was suspended in December by Nhleko over an allegation he was involved in unlawful renditions.
