Taxi, bus operators ask Bhisho to cough up R19m

The Eastern Cape Taxi and Bus Chamber, known as One Future Development 46 (OFD46), is demanding R19-million from the transport department.

In a letter seen by the Daily Dispatch, OFD46 is demanding that the department pay them R19481252.18 for scholar transport provided last year.

OFD46 director and spokesman Vuyani Mshiywa said the department had been promising to pay but had failed to do so.

“We are not fighting with anyone here. We want the money due to us to be paid because we have to pay the service providers their money for the work they’ve done,” said Mshiywa.

He said all they received were verbal agreements.

“There’s just nothing positive coming from this department and our service providers are breathing down our necks about their money. Hence we’ve asked a lawyer to prepare us a letter to this department.”

OFD46 legal representative, Mzwai Mqanto and Associate attorneys, demanded that the department pay the money immediately.

“We are instructed to demand from you a payment of R19481252.81 to be paid to our client’s account by February 2 and failing which, further legal action will be taken without any further notice to you and also interest will be claimed against you.”

Transport department spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca said they had written to OFD46 requesting them to submit all outstanding documents to process the payments.

“We requested them to submit all the outstanding proof of delivery documents so that we can close our books with them following the end of our contract in December 2014.

“We were waiting for final invoices to make one final payment to the service provider,” said Kumbaca.

OFD46 started working with the department in July 2011 and their contract ended last December.

One of OFD46’s directors, Ntsikelelo Gaehler, said the non-payment was frustrating.

“They’ve got invoices, the PODs, but it’s a pillar-to-post game. If they are failing to pay last year’s money, how are they going to succeed in this new scholar transport system?” asked Gaehler.
