A DA councillor in the Buffalo City Metro was arrested on Wednesday in connection with allegations of rape and is due to appear in court soon.The councillor, whose name is known to the Daily Dispatch but cannot be named until he appears in court, is being detained at the Buffalo Flats police station.
East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala confirmed the arrest.
The DA’s Kevin Mileham said they were unclear at this stage “as to the exact status of the case”.
“According to the information we have, this arose from a domestic dispute between the councillor and his former girlfriend.
“The councillor denies the allegation of rape,” said Mileham.
He said the DA was clear in its stance against rape and violence against women, and trusts “the matter will be dealt with expeditiously by the legal system”.
Asked for comment the mayor’s spokesman Sibusiso Cindi promised to get back to the Daily Dispatch but at the time of writing had not responded. — ziphon@ dispatchlive.co.za/ / mikel@dispatch. co.za
