Family keeps constant bedside vigil for DJ Saba

Umhlobo Wenene DJ Saba Mbixane’s family members are keeping a vigil at his hospital bedside praying for a miracle.

While details around the Mbixane’s medical condition are being kept under wraps after doctors asked for three days to assess him, his uncle Sidima Mbixane said he spent hours at the hospital.

“I live here (at the hospital) from 9am until 4pm so that if there are any complications I am informed or any basic necessities that he (Mbixane) may need like bath soap I can be able to help quickly,” he said.

Umhlobo Wenene FM station manager Phumzile Mnci said Mbixane was reportedly in a “critical but stable” condition.

“We are not aware of the nature or extent of his injuries. All I know is that he suffered head injuries,” he said.

Mbixane was flown to the Nelson Mandela Central Hospital's (NMCH) intensive care unit after a motorbike crash outside Mt Frere on Monday.

According to eyewitnesses Zodumo Mfazwe, the radio legend was possibly trying to avoid low-flying vultures when he lost control of his bike while travelling along a gravel road.

Mfazwe said Mbixane had been wearing a helmet, but it was flung off during the incident.

Mt Frere police spokesman Lieutenant Edith Mjoko said officers had visited Mbixane’s house on Tuesday but found it empty.

“We are not conducting any investigation at the moment as no case has been opened,” said Mjoko.

The well-known DJ is a household name on South African airwaves and hosts Siwela Uthukela and maskandi show Lavuthi'bhayi on Umhlobo Wenene FM.

He is a five-time winner of the South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma) best radio show and radio DJ category.

Mnci said Mbixane’s colleagues were not coping well.

“He has not died, he was just involved in an accident. We are all saddened that one of us is in hospital but work must be done,” he said.

Mbixane’s family had the final say on whether space should be made for his fans to place flowers and messages of support at the hospital, said Mnci.

Two days before the accident, “Izaw’zawu”, as he is fondly known, hosted S’giya Ngengoma on rival SABC radio station Ukhozi FM during a work-related visit.

Listeners reportedly called the station begging him to stay. — loyisom@dispatch.co.za
