DJ Mbixane still ‘critical but stable’

Neighbours of critically injured Umhlobo Wenene FM DJ Saba Mbixane spoke of their fear of losing the icon who was injured in a motorbike crash earlier this week.

The Daily Dispatch yesterday visited Mbixane’s home in the remote Mandileni Village outside Mount Frere while the popular DJ’s family were allowed to see him in hospital for the first time yesterday.

His uncle, Sidima Mbixane, said he was still “critical but stable”.

“There has been no change at all. We hope he will improve through God’s will,” he said.

Villagers spoke of their fondness for Mbixane and their subsequent anxiety at hearing the news of his accident. While shocked, they expressed hope he would recover soon.

The multi-award-winning radio personality and businessman was described as a humble, funny and generous neighbour who had created jobs and supported families and siblings.

Mbixane’s 51-year-old sister, Bulelwa, said they were concerned at his unresponsive condition.

“This makes us think he is between life and death. We are troubled inside and cannot sleep at night,” she said.

Villager Mvuyisi Hlabane, 66, said Mbixane was still young and had a lot to live for. “We are poorer now that he is not around. He must wake up under any condition,” said Hlabane.

“Zaw’Zaw” or “Madala”, as Mbixane is fondly known, has several business interests including livestock and crop farming, an events management company and a traditional dance group.

Huku Senior Secondary School Grade 12 pupil Noluyolo Sopiseka, 17, said radio was not the same without Mbixane. “He is the only one that entertains us and he must get well soon,” she said.

The Eastern Cape Young Communist League spokesman Thabang Maseko issued a statement praising Mbixane’s role in youth development.

“He is one of those who have shaped young people’s attitudes through traditional music. We wish him a speedy recovery so that he is able to continue inspiring young people,” said Maseko.

Health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said Mbixane was still in a “critical but stable” condition. — loyisom@dispatch.co.za
