Producing professional nurses with strong ethics is to be the core focus for Lilitha Nursing College for the next five years.

College principal Nomvuyiseko Links said they were holding a two-day strategic session, assessing goals accomplished in the past five years and setting new ones for 2015 to 2020.

It had come to the attention of the provincial health department and college that something was amiss in the values and attitudes displayed by some in the nursing profession and their new strategy would be to correct this, Links said.

Provincial health MEC Dr Pumza Dyantyi said: “Year after year the college releases a crop of nurses to join the healthcare service.

“However the quality element remains questionable as patients visiting our health facilities continue to suffer under the wrath of unscrupulous nurses.”

Said Links: “We are in the process of developing new strategic goals. The focus is to look at the value system within the college. This will tackle the attitudes and behaviours of our nurses within this province, specifically those in training.

“Although ethical conduct and professionalism of nurses forms part of our curriculum, we decided from patients and the public, that we had to reinforce this.”

She said goals for the last five-year period included strengthening governance within the college; strengthening the nursing workforce by means of education and training; and the promotion of academic excellence.

Dyantyi told leaders at the session: “The obligation to produce nurses of the required standard of care and professionalism rests with training institutions and thus this strategic session should ensure that plans are crafted to meet this requirement.”

She said that for a while the college had focused on quantity above quality, but now the time had come to focus on quality as well.

“I would like to charge the college leadership to develop clear plans with specific time-frames and resolutions on its plans going forward,” Dyantyi said.

Links said a consolidated document would be finalised by the end of today. — vuyiswav@dispatch.co.za
