R3.5m boost for historic school in Healdtown

Historical Healdtown Comprehensive High School, once attended by struggle icon Nelson Mandela, has been given a new lease on life following a multi-million-rand facelift.

Last year the school had an enrolment of 124 pupils, a figure which increased to 254 this year.

“Education is the heritage of a community so the community is urged to look after the school and protect it from any vandalism,” Makupula said.

Masualle said the school should continue to be celebrated because of the struggle icons who attended it and later went on to be great leaders of the country.

“Twenty years into democracy, we have tried to meet the demands of the people, service delivery-wise. We have prioritised education and have tried to enhance the country’s education system over the years.

“This celebration here today is in line with that vision,” Masualle said, adding that the upward trend in enrolment numbers needed to continue.

Principal Mzingisi Douw said he appreciated the renovations, which were in line with his vision for the school.

“We want to ensure that we provide quality teaching and learning, focusing on maths and science,” he said.

“With these renovations the pupils will not only know how an experiment is conducted but will also be able to see it in action as well, something they will be experiencing for the first time.”

The renovations come as Healdtown prepares to celebrate its 160th birthday in May. — zisandan@dispatch.co.za
