ANC in big push for regional meeting

Preparations for the ANC’s Buffalo City regional conference are at an advanced stage as preliminary audits show more than 90% of the branches are ready to go for election.

The party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) announced last month they would like the metro to hold its elective conference by the end of this month.

For the past few weeks, auditors have been busy checking the status of each of the metro’s 50 branches to establish the numbers of ANC members in “good standing”.

Some of the criteria used to determine this include paid-up membership fees, and that a person has been an ANC member for at least six months to qualify for a vote at a branch general meeting (BGM).

According to ANC rules, for any structure to be able to go to an elective conference, it must meet a 70% threshold of members in good standing.

ANC regional secretary Pumlani Mkolo said all they were waiting for was approval from the upper structures to confirm the outcomes of preliminary audits, finalised last week.

“Once the audit outcomes are signed off by the secretary general, we will be able to go back to structures and present the report.

“Immediately thereafter we will give the green light to all branches who qualify to hold branch general meetings to do that,” said Mkolo.

“I can’t commit as of now when we will have the conference. We will get a go-ahead from the province once the final audit report has been signed and sealed,” said Mkolo.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane confirmed yesterday they were awaiting the final audit report for the region.

There are several lineups doing the rounds for the regional executive’s top two positions – chairman and secretary. One of them wants Mkolo to serve a second term as regional secretary, while another faction is fielding former ANC Youth League provincial chairman Ayanda Matiti to replace Mkolo.

But the Dispatch reported a few weeks ago that Viwe Sidali is also likely to contest the same position.

For the chairman position several names are being touted. Among them is former Cosatu provincial secretary Xola Pakathi, who is likely to contest against former BCM mayor Lulamile Nazo or former ANC provincial secretary Humphrey Maxegwana.

Once BCM elects its new regional bosses, four more regions would also be due for elective conferences.

These are Joe Gqabi, based in Barkly East; Chris Hani, in Queenstown; Sarah Baartman, in Grahamstown; and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
