The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) yesterday handed over wheelchairs and blankets to bedridden patients in Mdantsane.

Masibambisane Home Based Care is a non-profit organisation registered with the department of social development, which cares for disabled people and patients with chronic illnesses.

Masibambisane’s programme manager, Reverend Nokuzola Kota, said they approached the CDC for the donation because their patients could not afford wheelchairs of their own and struggled to move around.

“Crutches are not ideal, especially for the elderly who need something more comfortable and less tiring. We depend on donations and would have been unable to buy these wheelchairs ourselves,” said Kota.

CDC corporate social investment manager Thandi Rayi said they were moved to act by Masibambisane’s request.

She was part of the team that presented the eight wheelchairs and 50 blankets.

“Although they had only requested wheelchairs, because we are now approaching winter, we thought it would be necessary to also include blankets,” she said.

Rayi said the donation formed part of CDC’s community upliftment programme.

Beneficiary Welekazi Qave, who said she was in her 80s but wouldn’t be more specific, said she suffers from lymphedoema (chronic swelling of the limbs), and that standing for long periods was a struggle.

“I was so happy when I was told that I would be getting a wheelchair. It is definitely going to make my life easier,” she said. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
