The Bhisho government aims to build more than 13000 houses this year, nearly half of them in rural parts of the province.

This was announced in the provincial legislature this week by human settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August explaining the R2.29-billion budget allocated to her department for the 2015-2016 financial year.

Of the 13100 homes planned for the new financial year, 6158 were for rural and remote parts of the province.

Sauls-August said some of the houses would be built in areas such as Ntabankulu, Port St Johns, Flagstaff, Tholeni, Lusikisiki and Maluti – all in the eastern half of the province.

Sauls-August told the legislature her department was planning to upgrade 20 informal settlements in the upcoming financial year.

She said their plans included constructing 4785 “quality homes” as part of the department’s informal settlements upgrade programme.

The 20 informal settlements set to benefit are around Buffalo City Metro, Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, King Sabata Dalindyebo, Mnquma, Mhlontlo, Elundini and Maletswai Municipality in Aliwal North.

Sauls-August said some of the funding would go towards the construction of 315 housing units for military veterans.

She said three projects aimed at housing former liberation fighters, earmarked for 2015-2016, would see 57 houses built in the OR Tambo district, 200 around Lukhanji municipality and 68 units in Chatty.

Sauls-August also revealed that her department had “unblocked” 10 informal settlement upgrading projects in Ntabankulu, Kouga, Ngcobo, Senqu, Sakhisizwe, and Intsika Yethu municipalities. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
