The Eastern Cape government will spend more cthan R26-million this coming financial year celebrating and commemorating national days, political aligned individuals and events.

This was revealed by sport, recreation, arts and culture MEC Pemmy Majodina when delivering her department’s policy speech at Bhisho legislature recently.

Majodina said her department would allocate R2-million to celebrate freedom month in April and another R2-million to celebrate workers and African month in May.

“In April, the money will be used on conscientisation of communities about constitutional values and national symbols, while a portion of that will go towards Freedom Day celebrations on April 27,” she said.

The R2-million allocated for May will be used for construction and unveiling of a workers’ wall of remembrance in Buffalo City Metro and celebration of Workers Day on May 1, Africa Day on May 25 and international museum day.

Delivering her speech, mostly in Xhosa and Sotho, Majodina said that in June R3.4-million would be spent in build-up events to the 2016 centenary celebrations of the University of Fort Hare.

She said it would also be used for Youth Day commemoration on June 16 and for staging boxing tournaments.

The June funds will also be used towards the 55th anniversary of the Ngquza Hill massacre and towards the birthday celebrations of the Reverend James Calata, a former ANC secretary-general between 1936 and 1949, who was born in 1895.

In July, dubbed Mandela month, an amount of R3.7-million will be used to celebrate the life and times of Nelson Mandela “as a traditional leader” and for a contribution towards the Grahamstown Arts festival.

Majodina said, “to celebrate women’s month in August, the state will allocate R950000 which will be used for the national Women’s Day celebration, to commemorate 30 years since ANC stalwart Victoria Mxenge was assassinated and for a women’s social cohesion dialogue.”

In September and October, a combined amount of R7.4-million will be used. In September this money will be used towards commemorating 23 years of the Bhisho massacre and for the development and unveiling of Dr Walter Benson Rubusane’s memorial stone in East London.

Part of the money will also go towards the Saba Mbixane cultural festival. In October, a month dubbed OR Tambo month, R2.5-million will be used towards celebrating the liberation icon's birthday at his home village of Nkantolo.

In December, reconciliation month, R7-million has been set aside to commemorate two years since Mandela died.

Nothing is outlined in the policy speech for next January and February, but an amount of R1.2-million has been allocated for March 2016, human rights month.

“The allocation is set to be used for promoting the culture of reading across the province, provincial library week, social cohesion dialogue on human rights and for celebrating national human rights day,” Majodina said. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
