Public Protector to be called to deal with nudists

Anti-naturists want to involve the Public Protector in their cover-up campaign.

The Concerned Citizens Group‚ opposing KwaZulu-Natal’s first nudist beach‚ will discuss involving Thuli Madonsela in its battle to prevent naturists from baring all there when they meet tomorrow.

On Friday‚ Hibiscus Coast Municipality averted a crisis when police accompanied by members of the group arrived at Trafalgar Beach on the south coast to arrest the naturists‚ who had travelled from throughout South Africa for the unofficial opening.

The 250 metre stretch of beach‚ which falls under the Mpenjati Nature Reserve‚ was given official nude-beach status by the municipality in November. But the official opening has been delayed because of concerns by residents from neighbouring towns.

The group argues that although the municipality has given the beach the go-ahead‚ the proposed bylaw changes authorising the nude beached have not yet been passed.

Said head of the group Reverend Mike Effanga: “We will be reviewing all our legal options. We will also be discussing approaching the Public Protector.

“We are interested in the procedures followed in the entire process. Municipal bylaws have also been flouted here‚ there is no doubt‚” he said.

According to the laws: “No person shall be on the sea-shore or in the sea or any other place to which these bylaws apply‚ other than a booth‚ toilet or change room‚ unless so dressed‚ that‚ if a female‚ her nipples are concealed from view and if a male or female‚ their private parts are concealed from view and in each case by a suitable article of opaque clothing.”

Despite the threat arrest and confrontation with angry residents the naturists hit the beach stark naked this weekend‚ skinny dipping and sunbathing.
