The Anglo Boer War statue in front of the East London City Hall has been vandalised with white paint.
The statue of a man on a horse was erected in 1901 in memory of those who lost their lives during the war.
The East London statue is one of several defaced in South Africa in recent weeks.
Buffalo City Metro spokesman Thandy Matebese said the incident happened on Saturday evening.
According to Matebese‚ a group of people with silver paint on their faces splattered the statue and ran away.
Just before 9am‚ people were stopping to take pictures of the vandalised statue.
Yanga Bija described the vandalism as "childish".
“Whoever did this was obviously bored. Instead of doing this‚ the culprit should have used their time to do something more constructive‚” said Bija.
The Daily Dispatch‚ in conjunction with the University of Fort Hare‚ will on Monday night host a dialogue on new South Africans and what is appropriate for our public space.
The panel includes National Heritage Council CEO Sonwabile Mancotywa‚ the UCT student who covered Cecil John Rhodes’ statue in poo‚ Chumani Maxwhele‚ writer and academic Professor Pitika Ntuli and Professor Leslie Bank of the Fort Hare Institute of Social and Economic Research.
