A convicted rapist was described as a “cowardly hyena savaging a dead piece of meat” after he spiked a young girl’s drink with brake fluid before raping her.

Thulani Mrawuli, 25, was yesterday sentenced to an effective 20 years in jail for raping the girl, who cannot be named due to the nature of the crime, on November 24 2012.

East London High Court Judge Igna Stretch found the state witnesses to be frank and honest.

“The complainant ...  looked and spoke like a child. There is no doubt ...   knew   he was having sex with a child.”

In handing down sentence, Stretch said Mrawuli treated the girl as less than  human, describing his conduct as “disgusting, savage and barbaric”.

She said Nayi-Nayi was fortunate that because of the lack of detail in the charge he was convicted on a lesser charge of sexual assault.

Nayi-Nayi had assisted Mrawuli in carrying the girl out the car, he made his shack available for Mrawuli to use and he chased people away when they asked for the girl.

But he could not be convicted as an accomplice because he was not charged with that but with raping her.

The girl was in Grade 8 at the time and left school for two years because she was being shamed about the rape.

She would have been in Grade 11, but is now repeating Grade 8.

Stretch said a long imprisonment was the only way to rehabilitate the men. Mrawuli and Nayi-Nayi were sentenced to 25 years and 10 years imprisonment respectively.

Both had five years suspended for five years on condition they were not convicted of another sexual offence.

Their names are to be entered in the Sexual Offenders’ Register.

As the men were escorted to the cells by court orderlies, a member of the public shouted “niziphathe kakuhle (take care of yourselves)”.
