Sisulu vows to abolish worker hostels

Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu says her department plans to abolish hostels in cities.

Sisulu announced the move during her budget vote speech in Parliament this afternoon.

“We have heard your concerns‚” she said of the plight of those living in hostels.

She said her department would be looking at which of those hostel dwellers qualified for a government house or a housing subsidy.

Those hostels that had recently been upgraded would be used as “social housing” – particularly for working people under the age of 40.
