Eskom starts weekend with outages

Eskom started the weekend by announcing Stage 1 load-shedding from 10am this morning.

The announcement‚ made on Twitter just 25 minutes before the outages were to set to start‚ said “it is likely to continue until 10 this evening”.

Eskom‚ in its bi-weekly System Status Update‚ said that Friday evening’s peak available capacity was 32933MW while demand was forecast at 30 908 MW.

The power utility had had a good week up until Wednesday afternoon‚ when it urgently announced that stage 1 cuts were necessary. Hours later‚ this was escalated to stage 2.

Eskom attributed this to colder weather putting additional strain on the grid.

Earlier on Wednesday‚ the company boasted in a statement on its website: “In the past seven days (168 hours)‚ Eskom has only had to load-shed for about 10 hours and 47 minutes“.

Thursday saw a second day of stage 1 outages.

According to Eskom‚ Saturday will see 33764MW available to meet a predicted need of 30267MW; and on Sunday‚ the power utility believes it will be more that 4000MW in the black.
