The Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Congress in Port Elizabeth this morning got of to a very smooth start, with DA Eastern Cape DA leader Athol Trollip welcoming all delegates to the conference.

The day started with a brief press conference, where DA leaders were outlining their policies on family values.

The conference Presiding officer, Penny Tainton said the voter registration began at 06:30am and officially closed at 09:30.

She said the registration process was “ successful” and already 1278 delegates have registered out of the 1359 expected delegates.

Speaking with the Dispatch Tainton said: “This morning we had constitutional amendments, which might see an additional 21 delegates added for tomorrow’s voting.”

The hotly contested conference will see Trollip vying for the vacant Federal Chairman position, up against two other candidates, Western Cape based, Masizole Mqashela and Limpopo born Makhashule Gana.

However, the main position that has attracted more attention is that of the party leader. The position left vacant by Hellen Zille, is being contested by current DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane and Dr Wilmot James and the victor is expected to be announced midday tomorrow.

This week all three candidates for the Federal Chair position, spoke to the Daily Dispatch saying that they command an support in all the provinces.

Nelson Mandela Metro DA Mayoral candidate Trollip commands overwhelming support in the Eastern Cape. This week several Eastern Cape DA leaders including, DA MPs Nqaba Banga and Nosimo Balindlela pronounced that they will be voting for Trollip and Maimane.

Among the guests at the conference is former ANC activist turned businessman Mkhuseli Jack.  ​
