Police arrest 15 for rape, robbery and drugs

At least 15 people, three of them women, were arrested for crimes including raping a child, armed robbery and drug dealing in the Eastern Cape at the weekend.

Fake R100 notes totalling nearly R10000 were recovered in a raid on a village outside Mthatha.

A 55-year-old was arrested in a Butterworth informal settlement and charged with raping a girl aged 11.

“The girl was called shortly after 6.30pm by the suspect, who is a neighbour, and asked to fetch water from a tap,” police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said.

She took it to the suspect, he closed the door and instructed the victim to take off her clothes. “He then allegedly raped her.” The victim was reportedly given R11 and packet of chips and told to keep silent. The man is due in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court.

lAbout 13 suspects, among them the three women, were busted by Madeira police with suspected stolen goods worth around R35000 in the early hours yesterday.

The raid on rural homes in Ngolo village less than 10 kilometres from the city centre also uncovered a stash of drugs and dagga valued at more than R6000. Mthatha police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said some of the stash had been found in a deserted shack.

“The suspects were immediately arrested.” The suspects, aged between 18 and 46, should appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court today.

A man, 29, is expected to appear in the Tsolo Magistrate's Court after an armed robbery of a shop in Tsolo on Saturday afternoon.

“Three men entered a shop belonging to a Somali national. They pointed the gun at him and demanded money,” Fatyela said.

The robbers ran off but one suspect was arrested within a few hours.

In Dutywa, a 30-year-old man will appear in court for the possession of drugs on Friday.

He was caught with 33 tik straws valued at around R1800. — sikhon@dispatch.co.za
