Senior provincial and national government officials have expressed their happiness at preparations for the upcoming coronation of the AmaXhosa king.

The coronation of King Mpendulo Zwelonke Sigcawu takes place on Friday at Nqadu Great Place near Willowvale. Preparations for the event are well underway, as roads to the location are being repaired and work on houses at the Great Place is being carried out.

Cooperative and Traditional Affairs director-general Professor Charles Nwaila, his Eastern Cape counterpart Stanley Khanyile, public works boss James Mlawu and arts and culture head of department, Mzolisi Matutu, said everything was going according to plan after meeting yesterday.

About 10000 people are expected to attend the coronation including politicians, government officials, church leaders and business people.

Yesterday’s meeting was also attended by officials from the Presidency and representatives of AmaRharhabe Kingdom from Mngqesha Great Place near King William’s Town.

“I am satisfied with the preparation and the ground covered so far. Things are on course. Today we were just doing final touches. We will come back on Wednesday to double check if everything is in place,” said Nwaila.

“It marks the dawn of a new era where the dignity of traditional leaders is being restored,” he said. Khanyile said that a tent accommodating more than 5000 people would be erected today.

“Eskom has ensured us that there will be no load shedding in the area on that day, but we have arranged a generator as back-up.

He said that there will be 15 buses that will be used to transport people. Malawu said roadworks and renovations on homes at the Great Place would be completed by Thursday.

“We invested more than R5-million on upgrading the 59km road infrastructure leading to the Great Place and the palace. We have painted the buildings fixed the ceilings and attended to the toilets in the chalets and the houses.” — lulamilef@ dispatchlive.co.za/
