Politician Lindiwe Mazibuko is celebrating a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

“Results are in. Ngiphasile! (I’ve passed). Graduation next week!‚” she tweeted from Cambridge‚ Massachusetts‚ in the USA.

To her supporters‚ she said: “Thank you so much everybody for your beautiful messages! It’s been such a privilege to be able to take time out for school this year”.

“You have been with me in spirit all the way across the seas and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

In her time at Harvard‚ the world-renowned university first established in 1636‚ Mazibuko has shared her excitement at the extreme season changes and taken up cycling.

“School was cancelled because of a blizzard today‚ so we decided to go outside and play in the snow!‚” she Facebooked in February.

A month later she was learning about French politics: “I travelled to Paris for Spring Break on a study tour. It was a busy 10 days‚ packed with meetings. Learned a great deal about the workings and interests of France’s government‚ media and private sector. Squeezed in a bit of coursework and biking around the city too‚” she wrote on her Facebook page.

Mazibuko‚ the former Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader‚ first attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal to study a Bachelor of Music degree then moved to the University of Cape Town‚ where she obtained a BA (French‚ Classics‚ Media & Writing) in 2006 and a BA Honours (Political Communication) degree in 2007.

She says on her webpage that she got involved with the DA when she chose then leader Helen Zille as the subject for her honours dissertation. Mazibuko was elected to Parliament in 2009‚ and in 2011 was chosen as Parliamentary Leader. Zille recently handed over the party’s reins to new leader Mmusi Maimane‚ who had succeeded Mazibuko in parliament.

In response to her announcement that she had passed her Harvard course‚ Kalumbu Kapisa? @kalumbuk messaged her on Twitter‚ saying “Come back home‚ all is forgiven. Mmusi is now in charge”.

“You are a true inspiration. Come back home and plough back into your country. People like you are in demand‚” Ethel @MoroloED tweeted.

When Mazibuko quit Parliament to leave for Harvard‚ she said: “I want to challenge myself to be the best I can be not just in the South African context‚ but globally…“

“When the time is right‚ I will return to South Africa to pursue the goals that I have always set myself. I am under no illusions about how difficult this may be and I expect no favours from the DA in this regard.”

She added that she remained a supporter of the party.
