Weather service warns of snowfalls

As winter set in yesterday, the South African Weather Services (Saws) warned of the first snowfalls in the Eastern Cape later this week.

Spokesman for the SA Weather Service in the province Garth Sampson, said snow was expected to fall overnight on Thursday on high lying areas from Graaff-Reinet northwards.

“The snowfall will be disruptive and could lead to passes being closed,” said Sampson. According to Snow Report, snow started to fall on Sunday in the Western Cape.

“We expect to see widespread snow from the north of Lesotho to the south, and into the Eastern Cape Drakensberg around Rhodes and Tiffindell.

“Light snow could extend further south west into the Barkly East region.

“Thursday will see more light snowfalls on the Western Cape mountain ranges, Lesotho, and the Eastern Cape Drakensberg, as well as isolated snowfalls in the Molteno and Dordrecht area,” stated the report.

The report predicted more snow on Thursday in areas such as Hogsback.

The snowfalls are expected to end on Friday.

According to the weather service, today heavy rain could be expected towards evening over the western half of the East Cape with no rain expected over Transkei.

Tomorrow strong north westerly winds over the interior accompanied by scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the entire province.

On Thursday, it will be cloudy and cold with rain and showers.

Heavier showers and thundershowers are expected in places between Port Elizabeth and East London, which could result in localised flooding.

The first major disruptive snowfalls of the year are expected overnight over the northern interior. — arethal@dispatch.co.za
