“Don't violate us!” was the message on one of the placards held up by hundreds of children and teachers from 40 creches around Mdantsane who marched to central police stations yesterday to speak out against child abuse.

The marchers set off from two areas of Mdantsane at 10.30am.

Creches from NU1 to NU7 marched from Vulumzi Lower Primary School in NU1 to the Mdantsane police station while others from NU8 to NU17 gathered at NU14 at Hlongwane supermarket before marching to Nyibiba police station.

Children aged two to six walked with teachers under the protective eye of law enforcement officials, and held up placards stating “Stop neglecting us” as they sang: “Thina silwela amalungelo ethu, thina siyawazi amalungelo ethu” .

The principal of Songeze Day Care Centre in NU7, Nandipha Skwatsha, said a storm front delayed the march planned for Child Protection Week last week.

“We do not need official dates to say no to child abuse,” Skwatsha said.

Social development spokesman Gcobani Maswana said: “The many voices raising awareness can bring change. It should be an every day thing.” — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
