Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle yesterday urged present day youth to emulate the young men and women of 1976.

However, Masualle acknowledged the struggle fought almost four decades ago was different to the current situation faced by many.

“The 1976 youth showed bravery and commitment and put education as a priority,” said the premier when addressing hundreds of people at Youth Day celebrations in Mount Frere yesterday.

Most legislature officials and some MPLs wore school uniform in memory of the pupils and youth of 1976. Masualle said the youth and government needed to work together towards youth empowerment.

“The government must create a conducive environment to ensure youth emancipation and development.

“Today’s youth’s struggle is education and economic emancipation.

“We want the youth to be in the forefront in contributing to economic development and education of the people of Eastern Cape and the country.

“The youth need to have vision and mission and fulfil them,” said Masualle.

Although there were a number of Youth Day activities held throughout the province, the provincial commemoration was held in Mount Frere at Umzimvubu town hall under the theme “Moving Eastern Cape youth forward – towards true radical economic empowerment of youth free from racism, sexism and xenophobia”.

Masualle said the Youth Month this year was significant as South Africa marks 21 years of democracy and freedom.

“Our vision is to ensure that young people, irrespective of their background, can tap into our province’s resources so that they can create an even better Eastern Cape. “Our government commits itself to work tirelessly towards improving the lives of youth in the province to alleviate youth unemployment, forging economic inclusion and up-skilling youth.”

As part of widening participation and reaching out to the youth, the premier has invited young people to engage government through social media platforms of the Office of the Premier’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

He said that the Eastern Cape was busy with the Youth Development Framework and would complete consultation before the end of July. “The Youth Development Framework should be a systemic driven exercise, and not an accident,” he said.

The premier raised concern with the number of unemployed youth, but said that education was one of the major tools that could develop youth and create many jobs.

The ANC Youth League said government should prioritise education and ensure it was well-funded to enable young people from unemployed families to access education, even at tertiary level.

Earlier yesterday morning there was a 21km run by various athletes in commemoration of those who died in 1976. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
