Top producer DJ Clock snatches up talented EL rapper

East London rapper Blaqphamas has finally landed himself a record deal with a well-known producer. Blaqphamas, whose real name is Xolisa Hackula, recently signed with DJ Clock.

Many will remember the Durban record producer for his 2008 mega-hit Umahambayedwa. He is also the guy behind Beatenberg’s hit track Pluto (Remember You).

Speaking with the Daily Dispatch yesterday, DJ Clock confirmed they recently signed Hackula. He said he first heard Hackula rapping at Numbers Dance Club in 2014.

“He was performing at an event that I was also booked for at Numbers in East London. I liked what I was hearing and I decided to approach him,” he said.

The music producer said they would be releasing some of Hackula’s music later this year.

“What many people do not understand is that I know music and it is a universal language. When I see potential in a person, I go for it. I saw a lot of potential in this guy.

“We won’t be releasing an album this year but we will be releasing some music on iTunes. We will also shoot a music video for him,” DJ Clock said.

DJ Clock would not reveal how long their deal was with Hackula.

“For now we want to focus on making his music and releasing it to the public. We cannot reveal other details,” he said.

Hackula said he was excited about his new deal.

“I played two songs that were meant for the mixtape I am releasing this year. My song Hay’ Suka was the track that convinced them I had what they were looking for. This all happened on the way to the airport the morning after the gig,” he said.

Hackula left his job as a graphic designer at the Daily Dispatch and at the SABC as a radio presenter to pursue his music career.

The move has seen him work with Johannesburg artists.

“I quit my jobs for this, it’s all about hard work, dedication and self-belief.”

Since leaving his job, Hackula has performed at The Back to the City festival in Johannesburg, alongside big names. Together with Number and Nando, he had the opportunity to perform on e.tv’s Sunrise show. He has also performed at Pro’s birthday event and iFani’s album launch in Johannesburg.

Hackula, who was in Johannesburg for a couple of months this year, said it was easier to get gigs in the city of gold compared with the Eastern Cape.

The past two years after quitting his jobs, he has released his mixtape Running Late.

He said the deal with DJ Clock made him more certain about his ambitions.

“This means I didn’t sacrifice the comfort of a salary for nothing,” he said. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
