Promoter’s hard work recognised

Hard work and determination has finally paid off for gospel promoter Aviwe Gqomfa, with his first nomination for the Independent National Gospel Music Awards (Ingoma).

The 23-year-old has been nominated for his contribution in hosting events and promoting gospel music across the Eastern Cape. He has been nominated alongside Nhlanhla Gumede and Lungile Dube in the gospel artists promoter category.

The awards were founded by Dan Raseluma in 2013 to promote and celebrate the talent of upcoming and independent gospel musicians.

The Seymour village-born music promoter said he was grateful to God that his work had received national recognition.

“The hard work I’ve put in promoting artists and managing them is finally paying off. People normally see me running around at events and they do not understand why. I always make sure each show is up to standard,” he said.

Gqomfa said he first started out as a gospel backing vocalist for Unathi Nzube in 2011. “Even though I can sing, I knew that music was not my ministry. I found that promoting and managing artists was my calling instead,” he said.

He said when he decided to take the promoting route, artists such as Vovee Batala taught him the business side of the music industry.

“One must believe in what God has given them despite their background. When I started doing gospel shows I did not know that one day I would be among some of the few independent promoters nominated,” he said.

Gqomfa is currently managing husband and wife, Butho and Yolanda Vuthela. He has also worked with the likes of Dumi Mkokstad and Betusile Mcinga.

Other Eastern Cape nominees for the Ingoma awards include: Butho Vuthela for best street promo artist and song of the year, Yolanda Vuthela for best worship album, Unathi Nzube for best CD cover and best song writer, and Khanyisa Mphanyipeli for best traditional album. Yolanda and Butho Vuthela were also nominated for the best collaboration.

The awards will take place next month. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
