Presidency announces probe into eastern cape education

THE presidency announced today that the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) will conduct a probe into the Eastern Cape department of education.
Presidency spokesman Harold Maloka said President Jacob Zuma had made the proclamation following information received from the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.
He referred further questions to justice and the Special Investigative Unit (SIU), who could not immediately be reached for comment.
Eastern Cape education acting superintendent-general Ray Tywakadi said he was not in a position to comment.
According to a statement released by Maloka, Zuma had in terms of the SIU and Special Tribunals Act, 1996 (Act No. 74 of 1996), signed a proclamation authorising the SIU to “investigate allegations in respect of certain affairs” of the Eastern Cape department of education.
The SIU will investigate the following allegations:
lSerious maladministration in connection with the affairs of the department;
lImproper or unlawful conduct by employees or officials of the department;
lUnlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property;
l Unlawful, irregular or unapproved acquisitive act, transaction, measure or practice having a bearing upon State property;
lIntentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property; and
lUnlawful or improper conduct by any person, which has caused or may cause serious harm to the interests of the public or any category thereof.
