Members of the public around East London raised concerns earlier this week about thick black smoke seen coming from Frere Hospital.
East Londoners described the smoke as "sickening" and assumed it was coming from the institution’s incinerator on Tuesday afternoon.
Incineration involves the combustion of organic substances turning them into ash, gas or heat as part of a waste treatment or management process.
Frere Hospital CEO Dr Rolene Wagner, responding to con cerns about the smoke, said no incineration was done on the hospital grounds.
"I want to confirm that our incinerator is definitely not in operation and has not been since before 2005.
"However, the smoke was coming from the boiler room next to where the incinerator was located," she said.
Wagner said the facility was setting the combustion levels for their second boiler.
"In doing this, the standard operating procedures are to fire up the boiler on maximum setting, adjusting the settings downward. This did cause some smoke temporarily in the morning only , but certainly not present in the afternoon or today ," said Wagner.
She reiterated that there was no incineration done on site at Frere.
