Villagers blockade R72 in protest over condition of road

The protest alongside the R72 at the Chalumna turn-off dispersed just after 11am today according to villagers who were still at the scene when the Daily Dispatch team arrived at about mid-day today.

Between 50 and 70 protesters blockaded the R72 near the second Kidds Beach turn-off.  They are unhappy with the condition of a gravel road leading to their community.

Community member Veliswa Beshe said members of Ncera Village had gathered at 5am today to protest against the poor state of the road leading to their homes.

"There were more than 100 of us singing struggle songs, but we did not interrupt traffic", she said.

"The police shot teargas and we were scared and some of us ran away," said Noscelo Makoba.

Remnants of a cardboard placard reading "sifuna indlela" (we want roads) lay on the roadside.
