Stringing  wire fence to stop livestock getting into a schoolyard and planting 67 trees – that’s how President Jacob Zuma plans to honour Nelson Mandela International Day.

The presidency said in a statement that on July 18 Zuma would officially open a newly upgraded state-of-the-art school in Mvezo‚ near Mthatha.

The Makgatho Lewanika Primary School – the  result of a merger between Nkwenkwezi  and Mvezo primary schools –   has an enrolment of 600 learners.

As part of his 67-minute contribution to the community‚  Zuma will help reinforce the existing perimeter fence “by securing an extra mesh wire around the school in order to prevent the livestock from grazing inside the premises of the school”.

The president will also participate in the planting of 67 Umkhanyakude trees at Mvezo‚ Mandela’s birthplace.

Mandela Day  encourages all global citizens to take responsibility for improving other lives and addressing  social injustices.

If you’re interested but unsure what to do with your 67 minutes‚ here is an easy way to find a meaningful task.

Forgood (www.forgood.co.za) is an online platform that connects people with accredited causes.

Alternatively‚ create an offer around a specific skill you have or something special you want to do and an interested cause will contact you.

Andy Hadfield‚ CEO of Forgood, says: “There are some fantastic causes doing amazing things across the country‚ all of them need help in one way or another – be it a volunteer’s time‚ goods or services.

“However‚ there isn’t a central point that connects individuals or corporates with those causes..

“We’re the common denominator that will link the one to the other and, in so doing‚ we’re facilitating real value for everyone involved.”

Describing themselves as a social marketplace where skills‚ goods‚ services and information can easily be offered and asked for‚ Forgood is a central hub for individuals‚ groups and causes.

Some of the connections made through Forgood:

lA retired antiquarian book dealer offered his time to assist with valuing books at a book sale being hosted by a cause very close to where he lives. Due to his experience with books‚ he was able to give a sense of the real value of their stock and then the books were sold at market value.

The cause managed to raise considerably more funds than anticipated.

lA student residence group was looking for a Mandela Day activity for 350 students‚ and decided to respond to a need created by a cause on the Forgood website. As a result of the connection‚ the students will be put to work on Mandela Day at the Rare Diseases Society of South Africa.

Forgood can also be found on Facebook – /forgoodSA and Twitter – @forgoodSA.

So you don’t need to go paint the wall of your local community centre‚ if they didn’t really need the wall painted in the first place.
