Agri SA on Monday urged South Africans not to “dwell on the many structural and governance problems our country is facing” on Mandela Day.

Instead‚ the federation of agricultural organisations said‚ “we should by way of introspection and‚ even if for only 67 minutes‚ make a tangible contribution to alleviate the plight of the less privileged and to demonstrate compassion towards our fellow citizen”.

“Given the prevailing situation of widespread poverty and unemployment in our country we are also reminded that Mandela stood for ‘the right to live’‚” Agri SA president Johannes Moller said.

“I call on all farmers to‚ especially in the coming week‚ make a positive contribution in this regard‚ not only to allay the many negative reflections in relation to the labour dispensation in the agricultural sector but simply because it is the right thing to do.”

To this end‚ Möller said that Agri SA has “endorsed a Jobs Pledge mainly aimed at employment creation in our sector and also to enhance the quality of existing jobs”.

Mandela Day is celebrated worldwide on July 18.
