ANC leaders intervene in four regions

Leaders of four ANC regions in the province were summoned by the party’s national leadership to meet at an East London hotel yesterday and today.

The ANC top-brass delegation to the province, led by President Jacob Zuma, met leaders from the Buffalo City Metro and Chris Hani region on Sunday.

Yesterday, Zuma and his delegation met leaders from the OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo regions.

The sessions were part of a three-day visit by the party’s national officials to try and solve internal squabbles in the run-up to next year’s local government elections.

“We do not want, when we get to the election, to find out that there are still pockets of problems,” ANC national spokesman Zizi Kodwa told the Dispatch yesterday.

He said the national officials hoped to gain a regional perspective.

The national executive committee members will today meet an ANC delegation from the Joe Gqabi region.

The Daily Dispatch understands the visit was also sparked by numerous complaints by ANC branches about, among other issues, the rigging of membership forms.

ANC provincial spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the regions were summoned as the provincial executive committee was preparing to deliver its regions to their conferences.

Meanwhile, the Nelson Mandela Bay region’s troubles continue.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane had to rush to the Mandela Bay region after the regional task team convened a meeting with all branch executive committees.

This comes as the party is trying to iron out divisions within its structures in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro which are dominated by workers aligned to the National Union of Metalworkers of SA.

It is also where the ANC recently lost a by-election to independent candidate Andile Gqabi.

Mabuyane confirmed yesterday he was assigned to be part of the heated meeting where the regional task team outlined processes to be followed when branch general meetings were convened.

Other ANC national leaders, including Baleka Mbethe and Zweli Mkhize, were the ANC delegates to the Cosatu special national congress yesterday. — siphem@dispatch.co.za
