Municipal ward by-elections take place in six provinces on Wednesday‚ the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Tuesday.

Six of the 10 wards up for grabs are vacant because of the death of the incumbents‚ while the other four by-elections follow the resignations of councillors‚ the IEC said

The by-elections will be contested by 22 candidates – representing seven parties and two independent hopefuls — in 10 wards. One ward — Ward 13 in the Blouberg Municipality — is uncontested and will go to the African National Congress’ Mmangwako Jonathan Sekgoloane.

The by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape‚ KwaZulu-Natal‚ Limpopo‚ Mpumalanga‚ North West and the Western Cape‚ with polling stations scheduled to be open between 7am and 9pm.

“A total of 35834 voters are registered in the 38 voting districts where by-elections are scheduled to take place‚” the IEC said.
