Auwsa march to oust Fani

At least 50 members of the Association for Unemployed Workers of South Africa (Auwsa) gathered at the East London City Hall Friday afternoon to handover two letters of demand to the Buffalo City Metro council.

Auwsa general secretary Eric Rusi, who said they are not affiliated to any union or trade movement, said the first letter was a demand for municipal manager Andile Fani to be removed from his position and that the second letter was a plea to the ANC regional executive committee (REC) to address issues and cases of corruption within the municipality.

“Private investigations were conducted last year, recommendations were then made but nothing has been done about those. Also the question about Fani's qualifications has not been addressed; we demand answers,” said Rusi.

Rusi said the metro has 14 days to respond to their memorandum, failing which they should expect mass action.

BCM deputy mayor Xola Phakathi accepted the memorandum on behalf of the mayor, Alfred Mtsi, who was engaged in other meetings.

“We note your grievances and the mayor will be notified when he returns from Johannesburg,” Phakathi said.
