Child killed in hit and run

A little girl of seven was killed yesterday morning when she was hit by a bakkie whose driver is nowhere to be found.

The department of health’s forensic team arrived on the scene at 10.45am.

The girl’s mother pleaded with the police to find her daughter’s killer as she watched the body being covered and taken away.

Resident Nosicelo Wewe said: “Our roads are gravel roads and they are very bad.

“We don’t understand how any car could speed so much that a child can be killed.

“We called the police station several times but there was no help. Our ward councillor had to call an East London police van she saw passing by.”

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said the Scenery Park police station had only one vehicle to use as the others were all in for repairs.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and have called on anyone with information about the suspected driver to report the information to the police. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
