Northam‚ NUM sign three-year wage deal

Northam Platinum on Thursday signed a wage deal with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) at the company’s Zondereinde mine in the Limpopo Province.

The platinum producer said that the three-year wage deal at the mine provided for increases on basic wages and allowances of 13% for entry-level underground employees in year one.

Entry-level underground workers would also receive 11.6% and 10.5% in basic wages and allowances for the second and third year‚ respectively.

Supervisory employees would get a basic increase of 7.5% per year for each of the three years.

Northam CE Paul Dunne said: “This is a good outcome for both employees and the company as it provides certainty and allows all stakeholders to focus on the sustainability of the business going forward.”

Ecliff Tantsi‚ NUM chief negotiator at Northam said‚ “The NUM wishes to express its sincere gratitude to its members at Northam Platinum for the manner in which they behaved during the negotiation period until they gave us the mandate to sign this substantive agreement.”
