Education MEC Mandla Makupula has commissioned an investigation into how a deputy principal of a Mthatha school was murdered inside school premises.Mthatha district director Themba Dyasi made the announcement at the funeral of Efata School for the deaf and blind deputy principal Nodumo Mdleleni-Mzimane, 50, who was brutally murdered in her room within the school’s premises on July 28.

Her body was found in a pool of blood with a knife still lodged in her back.

Speaking at the funeral in Ncise village about 15km outside Mthatha on Saturday, Dyasi said the internal investigation, which will start in earnest this week, had been commissioned by Mandla Makupula and his superintendent-general Ray Tywakadi.

“The school premises need to be searched thoroughly,” Dyasi said.

Dyasi said the investigation is in response to a letter he wrote Tywakadi last week.

The letter requested department launch an internal investigation.

“We as the department of education must clean our house. I am convinced that the killer is someone who is familiar with this school’s environment and movements of the late teacher,” he said.

Speaking at the funeral, Xhanti Mzimane, the brother of MdleleniMzimane’s husband Yandisa, took the mourners through what his brother saw on his arrival at the scene.

“ found his wife lying in a pool of blood with the killer’s knife still lodged deep in her back. I don’t want to imagine that sight,” Mzimane said.

In a moving eulogy, an emotional Yandisa also paid tribute to his wife.

“Now she is no more. I am alone with the children. My children I will always look after you.

“I will be a mother and father to you. Please be strong like me. The church and all the people of Ncise, please pray for me,” Yandisa said.

Dyasi urged everyone at the school to co-operate when the investigators arrive.

“Let us not allow people to kill with impunity. Let’s assist the investigation so that those who did this can be arrested,” Dyasi said.

Speculation is rife that the killer must have entered Mdleleni-Mzimane’s room through the roof.

“As the department we need check how clean we are.

“If we are not, someone needs to be arrested even if it’s me, the district director,” Dyasi said.

Family spokesman Babini Mzimane said they have more questions than answers.

School principal Nolundi Nqolo described their late colleague as a woman of God.

“She was an epitome of beauty and a staunch Christian,” Nqolo said.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Dineo Koena said a special task team had been established and was following leads, but no arrests have been made.
