The Eastern Cape ANC has postponed the Sarah Baartman region’s elective regional conference for another week.

Regional secretary Scara Njadayi said that after discussions with provincial executive committee (PEC) deployees to the region, “we decided to give our branches one more week to prepare for the conference”. The conference was initially scheduled for the end of last month, but after five branches registered disputes, the PEC gave the branches two more weeks to rerun their branch general meetings (BGM).

The BGMs elect delegates to the regional conference, finalise policy review positions taken by the branch and decide on who to support to lead the region after the conference.

Njadayi said of the five branches that appealed outcomes of their BGMs, one BGM was nullified and the others had to reconvene and redo their BGMs.

“We are trying to ensure that our conference is inclusive of all branches which are in good standing,” said Njadayi.

The Daily Dispatch reported two weeks ago that of the eight ANC regions in the province, six are due to have elective conferences next month – Buffalo City Metro, OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo, Joe Gqabi, Chris Hani and Sarah Baartman.

At BCM and OR Tambo, there were reports of factional fights within branches over candidates being nominated to lead the regions.

Elective conferences in these regions were shelved and now aim to follow the Sarah Baartman region’s conference.

ANC provincial spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the PEC had determined that almost all regions due for conferences must hold them by the end of this month. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
