Divisions within ANC structures in Buffalo City Metro (BCM) are likely to be laid bare tomorrow when disgruntled party members march to ANC regional offices in Oxford Street.

ANC stalwart and former Bhisho MPL Joe Jordan said the march was their last resort to get attention after having filed several disputes with the ANC structures over manipulation of branch membership figures to favour a certain faction.

Jordan said the party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) had failed to report back to general membership after ANC leaders from Luthuli House sent deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte to investigate membership rigging allegations, including the exclusion of several members viewed as being against the interests of the BCM ANC regional executive committee (REC) towards the conference.

Duarte in June this year spent two days listening to complaints from several ANC branches in BCM.

A few weeks later ANC president Jacob Zuma led a team of officials who invited branches with disputes to tell their side of the story.

Feedback from either hearing has yet to be made public.

“We want to make it known that we can’t say yes when local leaders hide findings of the Jessie Duarte investigation.”

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane confirmed receiving a copy of the letter, which has been sent to Luthuli House.

But Mabuyane warned those who will form part of the protest action, saying: “Any ANC member who is part of this will be bringing the party into disrepute.”

South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) provincial deputy chairman Dan Bolman has called for cool heads, saying marching against the REC was no solution.

“We have resolved a lot of differences with our alliance partners and partaking in such a march will be a drawback to such fruitful discussions on very important issues,” said Bolman.

The militant Unemployed Workers Union (Unewu) of South Africa’s BCM arm also distanced themselves from the action.

Unewu BCM youth wing chairman Cedrick Sobe said: “We are going to allow the ANC to deal with its internal matters.”

The march is scheduled to start at 11am at the North End stadium.

“We have already secured a permit from law enforcement agents. It’s signed and sealed. We are busy with preparations,” said Xolani Somaca, the spokesman of the group.

Attempts to get confirmation from BCM’s Keith Ngesi on whether the group had secured a permit or not had been unsuccessful by print deadline.

Mabuyane said what was interesting was that some of the organisers of tomorrow’s march had not registered any disputes with the appeals committee.

“This is a case of disgruntled people who are doing all in their power to discredit the ANC leadership,” said Mabuyane.
