Up-and-coming DJ Shimza, a graduate of the Soul Candi Academy, will be in Mthatha tonight to promote his new album, Shimuzic.

DJ Shimza, real name Ashley Raphala, who has previously only released compilation albums, said it was his first full album.

“This album has been highly anticipated, not just by my fans but for me as a musician. It was just a natural movement, a very big part of progress. I just felt that it was time,” he said.

The popular DJ, who produced the popular hit single I’ll be Back, said fans would be able to get a taste of who he really is, musically.

“This album constitutes of all types of house strains from the commercial sound with the song I did with Dr Malinga to the more soulful sound like the song I did with Simphiwe Dana called Looking for Love,” said Raphala.

He said his family’s love for music influenced his career choice.

Raphala, who is from Thembisa in Johannesburg, also has a big heart as he reflected on the charity show he gives in his hometown annually over the festive season.

“The DJ Shimza’s one-man show has for the past seven years been an important fixture on Thembisa’s calendar, and the best thing that has come out of my career.

“We cook for the under privileged children, perform for them and then we use the money from the proceeds towards new schoolwear for them,” said Raphala.

lHe will be performing at Mthatha’s So What lounge in Southernwood tonight, doors open at 7pm, tickets are R100 available at the door. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
